The liberal advocacy group Americans United for Change also issued a statement assailing Republicans for blocking Cordray, accusing lawmakers of siding with “big banks that are doing everything to avoid being held accountable for crashing the economy and costing our country millions of jobs, and against consumers.”
Embracing the Occupy Wall Street themes, Tom McMahon, executive director of Americans United, said in the statement that Republican lawmakers responded to more than $125 million in campaign contributions from the financial industry so far this cycle. “This unbelievably selfish act on the part of Republicans continues to expose all of us to the tricks and traps of big banks and credit card companies,” McMahon said.
