$400,000 TV Ad Campaign Targets Senators McConnell, Vitter, Burr in Home States, Urges Them to Break Their Addiction to ‘Dirty’ Oil Money and Pass the American Power Act

“Oil isn’t just polluting the Gulf - It’s polluting our politics”

Washington DCAmericans United for Change and American Family Voices teamed up to unveil a new television ad campaign targeting Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY), David Vitter (R-LA), and Richard Burr (R-NC) in their home states that features unsettling underwater footage from the ongoing, disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico with the message: “The oil isn’t just polluting the Gulf - It’s polluting our politics.”    Noting the hundreds of thousands of dollars each of these Senators have taken from the big oil companiesover the years, the spot ‘Dirty’ urges them to back the American Power Act – comprehensive legislation that will decrease our nation’s dependence on oil and create millions of new clean energy jobs. See scripts below for all three versions of ‘Dirty’ which will air in Kentucky, North Carolina and Louisiana, June 1st – 4th.

Americans United for Change is sponsoring the ads targeting Sens. McConnell and Burr, spending $100k on broadcast TV in Louisville and Lexington, KY and another $100k on broadcast in Greenville and Wilmington, NC.

Tom McMahon, Executive Director, Americans United for Change:“We understand that Senate Republicans have been given 35 million reasons by the big oil companies to stand in the way of clean energy legislation.  But there are 50,000 reasons for them to break their addiction to big oil money gushing into the Gulf of Mexico by the barrel every day – 50,000 reasons to join the Democratic efforts in Congress to rein in the nation’s dependence on oil. In the face of an environmental catastrophe of this magnitude, we hope that even the Grand Oil Party will think twice before standing with the polluters and standing in the way of a clean energy future and new clean energy jobs.”

Mike Lux, President, American Family Voices:“If the incensing environmental devastation in the Gulf doesn’t serve as a wake up call for Senate Republicans to support clean energy legislation, nothing ever will. This disaster is not just the result of BP’s negligence, but also our nation’s great demand for and short-sighted pursuit of dirty energy.  The pollution washing up on shores all across the Gulf region usunderscores the urgent need for Congress to pass a long-term energy plan that steers our nation away from dirty energy and towards adopting cleaner, alternatives sources of fuel.  The American Power Act is that plan.”

“And if Senate Republicans are truly interested in our national security, they must support this legislation that will cut our dependence on foreign oil and cut deep into Middle East oil profits that wind up in the hands of our enemies,” added McMahon.  “But so far, they have only expressed interest in securing more and more of the big oil money that has polluted our politics for decades.”
