Bangor, ME - As the Bush administration's failed ‘stay the course' policies in Iraq entered into a 5th year last month, and as U.S. forces continue to suffer tragic consequences policing an increasingly bloody civil war, Americans United for Change and Maine People's Alliance -- members of the national coalition Americans Against Escalation in Iraq -- unveiled an aggressive new TV ad campaign in Maine taking U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) to task for supporting President Bush's failed war policies and calling on her to vote to bring an end to the war. The $100,000 ad blitz will begin airing statewide in Maine today and will run through the middle of next week. The ad shows footage of Senator Collins speaking on the floor of the Senate and highlight's her vote last week against key legislation to set a date certain for the responsible redeployment of American forces out of harm's way in Iraq. "4 years. Nearly $400 billion squandered. Over 32,000 American soldiers wounded. Over 3,200 American lives lost. How many of those lives were lost since President Bush dressed up in a flight suit and declared ‘mission accomplished,'" said Jesse Graham, Executive Director of Maine People's Alliance. "Despite recent posturing about the Bush-Cheney escalation plan in Iraq for the newspapers back home, Senator Collins -- at the end of the day - always stands by President Bush and his failed "stay the course" policy in Iraq. In March 29th, the Senate faced the most historic and significant vote on Iraq since the vote to authorize the war, and when it mattered most, Senator Collins voted against a new direction in Iraq, against holding the Iraqi government accountable, and against bringing our men and women home from this bloody civil war that has no end in sight. It is our hope that Senator Collins changes her own course and does everything in her power to end the war in Iraq."
The new ad, entitled ‘Deserve' comes on the heels of a similar ad Americans United for Change launched in Kentucky last week, calling on Senate Minority Leader and Obstructionist-in-Chief Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to stop blocking change in Iraq. This week, Americans United is also launching a similar ad in New Hampshire calling on Senator John Sununu (R-NH) to vote to wind down the war in Iraq.
