Concord, NH - As the Bush administration's failed ‘stay the course' policies in Iraq have now entered into a 5th year and as U.S. forces continue to suffer tragic consequences policing an increasingly bloody civil war, Americans United for Change and NH Citizens Alliance for Action -- members of the national coalition Americans Against Escalation in Iraq -- unveiled an aggressive new TV ad campaign in New Hampshire taking U.S. Senator John Sununu (R-NH) to task for supporting President Bush's failed ‘stay the course' policy in Iraq and calling on him to vote to bring an end to the war. The $100,000 ad blitz will begin airing statewide in New Hampshire today and will run through next week. The ad, entitled ‘Stand' spotlights a recent episode, as reported in the Washington Post, where Sen. Sununu fled from reporters "in a sprint" when asked about the President's policy in Iraq, yelling, "you know where I stand!" Senator Sununu did, in fact, take a stand with his vote on March 29th against key legislation to set a date certain for the responsible redeployment of American forces out of harm's way in Iraq - a vote which came on the heels of the New Hampshire House of Representatives resolution (HR10) condemning the President's escalation plan. "Last Wednesday, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted 214-151 in favor of House Resolution 10," said Rep. Gilman Shattuck (D-Hillsborough). "I am a veteran, and I voted for it. I consider myself a patriot, and I voted for it. I have a grandson who is regular Army, stationed in the Iraq theatre for more than three years, initially in Kuwait with frequent trips to Baghdad and now for more than a year in Baghdad, and I voted for House Resolution 10. With our vote last Wednesday, New Hampshire took a stand on the war. The very next day, Senator Sununu voted against changing course in Iraq, putting himself at odds with the New Hampshire House and the New Hampshire public. Instead of voting to support the troops by bringing them home, he cast his vote for a blank check for President Bush to continue a war without end."
"4 years. Nearly $400 billion squandered. Over 32,000 American soldiers wounded. Over 3,200 American lives lost. How many of those lives were lost since President Bush dressed up in a flight suit and declared ‘mission accomplished,'" said Sam Blair of NH Citizens Alliance for Action. "How discouraging it must have been for New Hampshire families, many of whom have loved ones serving overseas, to hear that Senator John Sununu actually ran away in a sprint to avoid questions about where he stands on the failed Bush-Cheney ‘stay the course' policy in Iraq. On March 29th, the Senate faced the most historic and significant vote on Iraq since the vote to authorize the war, and as he has done so many times before, Senator Sununu stood by President Bush and Vice-President Cheney and voted against a new direction in Iraq, against holding the Iraqi government accountable, and against bringing our men and women home from this bloody civil war that has no end in sight. It is our hope that Senator Sununu changes his own course, listens to people of New Hampshire who have publicly condemned the failed Bush-Cheney policy and does everything in his power to end the war in Iraq."
The new ad, entitled ‘Stand' comes on the heels of a similar ad Americans United for Change launched in Kentucky last week, calling on Senate Minority Leader and Obstructionist-in-Chief Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to stop blocking change in Iraq. This week, Americans United is also launching a similar ad in Maine calling on Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) to vote to wind down the war in Iraq.
