Washington DC -- Americans United for Change acting Executive Director Tom McMahon issued the following statement on the eve of the bipartisan health care summit in the nation’s capital tomorrow:
“The seriousness with which Congressional Republicans take the health care discussion with the President tomorrow can be judged based on how many talking points they parrot directly from conservative pollster Frank Luntz’ infamous 2009 strategy memo for killing any and all health insurance reform. From day one Congressional Republicans followed Luntz’ playbook to the letter -- paying lip service to addressing the health care crisis while offering no plan of their own, and positioning themselves politically against an imaginary government plot to take over health care and come between patients and their doctors. Suchdisingenuous rhetoric is not surprising considering the source is bought and paid for among others by Blue Cross Blue Shield, one of the many insurance giants spending millions to kill reform so they can continue maximizing profits excluding coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, dropping policy holders when they get sick, and raising premiums by double digits as often as they can. Can we expect to hear anything from Republicans other than the same baseless, divisive, politically charged Luntz rhetoric we’ve been hearing for months? We’ll see.”
