Too Little, Too Late,
Congressman Knight

Knight Wants Credit for Formally Disavowing Trump After Revelations the Republican Presidential Nominee Bragged About Sexually Assaulting Women -- But Why Didn’t Knight Do That After Any of Trump’s Other Deplorable Statements Against Immigrants, Muslims, and Women?

Washington DC – Congressman Steve Knight (R-CA-25) desperately wants voters to know he will not support Donald Trump in November after a tape from 2005 became public of a then 59-year-old Trump bragging that he made advances towards a married woman and that his celebrity status has allowed him to get away with sexually assaulting women. Calling it a ‘Profile in Cowardice’, Americans United for Change questioned why it took so long for Knight to formally denounce support for Trump for President after sitting on the fence through wave after wave of the Republican Nominee’s other disgusting and disqualifying remarks against immigrants, Muslims, and women.

Brad Woodhouse, President, Americans United for Change: “Excuse me if Congressman Knight’s 11th hour exit from the Trump train smacks of political desperation. It rings hollow considering Knight kept voters guessing about his support for Trump even after he smeared all Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and “drug dealers” that require a mass “deportation force”, or proposed banning all Muslims from entering the U.S., or mocked a reporter with a disability, or led a racist crusade accusing the President of not being an U.S. citizen, or said women who seek an abortion should be criminalized, or insulted the Gold Star parents of a fallen Muslim-American war hero. Why didn’t Knight declare he won’t support Trump in response to any of this extreme and hateful rhetoric? This transparent attempt by Congressman Knight to save his political hide is simply too little, too late.  It’s obvious Congressman Knight is only trying to run away from Trump now that he’s tanking in the polls, and that shows this is about politics not principle. Let’s not forget Knight was content with an unapologetic racist and misogynist being the nominee of his party until now (supposedly), and he must own it.”

Congressman John Mica Stands By Sexual Assault Braggart, Donald Trump

Defending the Indefensible Should Disqualify Mica from Office

Washington DC – If there is just one thing voters should remember about Congressman John Mica (R-FL-07) in November is that he declared “I will still support” Donald Trump for President in response to a surfaced tape from 2005 of then-59-year-old Trump bragging that he made advances towards a married woman and that his celebrity status has allowed him to get away with sexually assaulting women. Mica’s continued embrace of Trump and his trivialization of criminal behavior against women as “locker room talk” is reprehensible in its own right but not surprising considering the Congressman defended the Republican Presidential nominee through wave after wave of other disgusting and disqualifying remarks against immigrants, Muslims, and women.

Brad Woodhouse, President, Americans United for Change: “It’s clear that there is no bridge too far for Congressman Mica in his unquestioning support Donald Trump, not even revelations that Trump finds it funny that he’s paid no price for committing sexual assault. Mica’s ‘boys will be boys’ defense of Trump is almost as disturbing as the comments themselves. What the Congressman doesn’t seem to understand is that it doesn’t excuse him when he condemns Trump’s latest sickening offense because each time he only double down on his position that Trump should be President. Does Mica honestly think he can endorse Trump without endorsing his disgusting behavior and dangerous policies? It’s a package deal.  As long as Mica endorses Trump, he owns Trump’s views that Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and “drug dealers” that require a mass “deportation force”, that all Muslims should be barred from entering the U.S., that women who seek an abortion should be criminalized, or that it was ok to mock someone with a disability, that it was ok to lead a racist crusade accusing the President of not being an U.S. citizen, or that it was ok to insult the Gold Star parents of a fallen Muslim-American war hero.  For Congressman Mica to try to defend the indefensible behavior of Donald Trump more than anything else disqualifies him from continuing to hold office.”

Congressman David Young Stands By Sexual Assault Braggart, Donald Trump

Washington DC – Congressman David Young (R-IA-3)’s support for Donald Trump for President remains firm despite a tape surfacing of a then-59-year-old Trump bragging that he made advances towards a married woman and that his celebrity status has allowed him to get away with sexually assaulting women. Young’s commitment to Trump is not surprising considering the Congressman stood by the Republican Presidential nominee after many of his other disgusting and disqualifying remarks against immigrants, Muslims, and women. But Americans United for Change today posed the question: Is there anything, anything at all, that could make Congressman Young reconsider his endorsement?  How about the new revelations out today that: “Four women who competed in the 1997 Miss Teen USA beauty pageant said Donald Trump walked into the dressing room while contestants — some as young as 15 — were changing,” and Trump creepily assured them “Don’t worry, ladies, I’ve seen it all before.”  Does Congressman Young stand by that, too?

Brad Woodhouse, President, Americans United for Change: “It’s clear that there is no bridge too far for Congressman Young in his unquestioning support Donald Trump, not even revelations that Trump bragged about getting away with sexual assault. What the Congressman Young doesn’t seem to understand is that condemning Trump’s latest sickening offense or extreme rhetoric doesn’t excuse him as long as he stands by his endorsement of Trump for President. Does Congressman Young honestly think he can endorse Trump without endorsing his disgusting behavior and dangerous policies? It’s a package deal. As long as Young supports Trump, he owns Trump’s views that Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and “drug dealers” that require a mass “deportation force”, that all Muslims should be barred from entering the U.S., or that women who seek an abortion should be criminalized. Why doesn’t Young find it disqualifying that Trump mocked someone with a disability, or led a racist crusade accusing the President of not being an U.S. citizen, or insulted the Gold Star parents of a fallen Muslim-American war hero, or laughed about grabbing women inappropriately?  It doesn’t reflect well on his own judgement or values. For Congressman Young to try to defend or look the other way at the indefensible behavior of Donald Trump more than anything else disqualifies him from continuing to hold office.”
