Washington D.C. – As the debate over health insurance reform enters the home stretch in the nation’s capital, Americans United for Change launched a new radio campaign today encouraging Nevadans to cheer on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as leads the final charge to pass reform, including a public option, this year.  The ad will air for a week in the Reno and Las Vegas media markets starting today.  See script for “Finish Line” below.

Tom McMahon, Acting Executive Director, Americans United for Change: “This effort is about giving Senate Majority Leader Reid the support he needs as he continues to take on the big health insurance industry, which is spending millions of dollars to kill health insurance reform in the 11th hour – especially reform that includes a strong public option.  Through this effort, we hope to send a message to all Senators that advocates of health insurance reform will have their backs if they vote for health insurance reform -- including a public option -- and that they will have the political high ground in doing so.”

A new Washington Post-ABC poll released yesterday found: “57 percent of all Americans now favor a public insurance option.”

“The big insurance industry is not very happy with Senator Reid for leading the charge to repeal its baffling exemption from anti-trust laws – an exemption that they’ve exploited for decades,” added McMahon.  “With 94 percent of insurance markets in the United States now highly concentrated, insurance companies across the nation take full advantage of this total lack of competition by refusing to cover millions of people with pre-existing conditions, rescinding policies when people get sick, and raising premiums four times faster than wages – all done to maximize industry profits and compensate its CEO’s tens of millions of dollars.   And as a direct result, millions of sick Americans are left out in the cold with nowhere to go.  We applaud Senator Reid’s efforts to create real competition in the health insurance market by repealing the industry’s exemption from the anti-trust laws and by passing health insurance reform including a public option.  Real competition for the private insurance industry will mean quality and affordable health care for Nevada families.”

In response to the news last week of a $1 million misinformation campaign running on TV in several states, including Nevada, paid for by America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) – the top lobbying group for the health insurance industry -- Americans United for Change released this memo calling out the insurance industry’s desperate 11th hour attempt to kill health insurance reform by scaring seniors:

Script: “Finish Line”

The fight to provide health care to every American has been a marathon.

The race began decades ago and many leaders have carried the baton.

The insurance companies have done everything possible to put obstacles in our path.

They want to be free to use pre-existing conditions to deny care … to cut people off when they get sick… to keep raising premiums.  And they sure don’t want to compete with a public health insurance plan.

Now that the marathon is beginning its last lap…. the insurance companies are desperate to prevent us from getting to the finish line.

Luckily the guy whose has been handed the baton to run that last lap – is Nevada’s Senator Harry Reid.

Luckily… because Harry Reid isn’t afraid to fight the insurance companies. He’s already gone after their anti-trust exemption…. and he’ll keep fighting until we get health care for all Americans – including a public option – this year.

Cheer him on.  Call Senator Reid at 702-388-5020 -- tell him to keep fighting until we win.
