Washington, DC – As Congressmen Eric Cantor, 47, Paul Ryan, 40, and Kevin McCarthy, 45, celebrate the official release of their new book "Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders”, Americans United for Change today unveiled a satirical new web video based on the Republican Representatives’ own promotional video that is one of the most absurdly grandiose of its kind in recent memory.  “Young Guns Reloaded” outlines what the Republican leaders are really gunning for - our retirement and health security and middle class jobs.   Click here to view ‘Young Guns Reloaded,’ produced by MannattMedia.com: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PL2glpuxNA

These not-so-young guns, who are not too many years away from receiving their AARP cards, are trumpeting Rep. Ryan’s ‘Roadmap’ budget plan that would privatize Social Security and replace Medicare with a voucher system that shortchanges seniors on medical care.  Last night at the official “Young Guns” book launch party in Washington, attendees were met at the door with a rally of seniors and retiree advocates waving “Hands Off My Social Security and Medicare!” signs who offered party goers cans of cat food, representing the tough choices seniors would be facing today if the Ryan/GOP ‘Roadmap to Ruin’ were the law of the land.  Click here for pictures: http://www.americansunitedforchange.org/press/releases/seniors_social_security_advocates_rally_outside_young_guns_book_launch_part/

As the ranking Republican Member of the House Budget Committee, Ryan along with GOP House leaders Cantor and McCarthy could one day be in a position to advance the Bush-era scheme to turn our guaranteed benefits over to their friends on Wall Street – a plan that seems all the more reckless and irresponsible as today marks the 2 year anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers

Tom McMahon, Executive Director, Americans United for Change:“The self-described Republican “Young Guns” claim to have fresh new ideas that reek of the same old failed Bush polices that led to the Great Recession.   Representative Paul Ryan's radical plan to eliminate Social Security as we know it was rejected by the American people in 2005 and remains hugely unpopular today. And a majority of Americans are saying ‘NO’ to replacing Medicare with a voucher system that would shortchange seniors on their medical care. Paul Ryan's ‘roadmap,’ embraced by leaders of Republicans in the House like Minority Whip Eric Cantor, seeks to hand over our guaranteed Social Security and Medicare benefits over to their friends on Wall Street. A new slick cover on the same old Bush-era policies isn’t fooling anyone.”

WashingtonPost’sEzra Klein calls the ‘reforms’ detailed in Ryan’s budget proposal “nothing short of violent.” Indeed, according to an in-depth analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: “[T]he Ryan plan would raise taxes for most middle-income families, privatize a substantial portion of Social Security, eliminate the tax exclusion for employer-sponsored health insurance, end traditional Medicare and most of Medicaid, and terminate the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The plan would replace these health programs with a system of vouchers whose value would erode over time and thus would purchase health insurance that would cover fewer health care services as the years went by.”
