“Slick” Chris Shays is at is again

Shays Says He's For Timelines to Withdraw Troops from Iraq and Votes Against Timelines for Withdrawing Troops from Iraq

"There are two things I agree on: we need to bring our troops home, and we need a deadline to do that" "Slick" Chris Shays, July 12, 2007, U.S. House of Representatives Before Voting Against Legislation to Drawdown Troops and Set a Deadline for Ending the War

July 13, 2007 (Washington, DC) - "Slick" Chris Shays (U.S. Rep., R-CT), a politician known for contorted positions and weak-kneed sleight of hand when it comes to controversial issues, is at it again.  Yesterday, Shays went to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives to say that: "There are two things I agree on: we need to bring our troops home, and we need a deadline to do that." Shays then proceeded to vote against, as he has all year, legislation which would begin to responsibly draw down troops in Iraq, get American forces out of harm's way and set a deadline for ending the war.

"When it comes to attempting to be slick, Chris Shays takes the cake," said Brad Woodhouse of Americans United for Change.  "But attempting to be slick, and being successful at it are two different things - and when it comes to Iraq, Chris Shays isn't fooling anyone.  Slick Chris supports President Bush and his failed policy in Iraq.  Words are cheap - actions count - and Chris Shays can tramp to the floor of the House and say he is for bringing troops home and setting deadlines all he wants - but until he votes for real legislation to bring our troops home by a date certain no one is going to believe him - no matter how slick he thinks he is."

"When it comes to the war in Iraq, Chris Shays has been one of President Bush's most loyal followers," Woodhouse Continued.  "He has visited Iraq 17 times only to return saying ‘the [Iraq] political process, it is moving forward' despite evidence and daily press reports to the contrary.  Slick Chris has stayed loyal to Bush on Iraq and ignored the facts on the ground while the U.S. death toll there has surpassed 3,600 troops.  A speech on the floor of the House about wanting to bring our troops home followed by a vote saying just the opposite tells you everything you need to know about Slick Chris."
