Top-50 List of Mitt Romney’s All-Time, Out-of-Touch, 1% Moments

September 14, 2012

Now at number #27 on the List:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Is $100,000 middle income?

MITT ROMNEY: No, middle income is $200,000 to $250,000 and less.

It’s helpful to know that Mitt Romney, a man who’s worth “between $150 and about $200 some-odd million dollars,” now thinking the middle income level is $250,000. Of course this is nowhere near the actual median income, reported by the Census Bureau this week at $50,000. Another out of touch moment from a candidate who has time and time again proved he doesn’t understand what middle class families are faced with –families that would wind up paying $2,000 more in taxes under the Romney plan so quarter billionaires like him can enjoy hundreds of thousands of dollars in new tax breaks they don’t need and won’t create jobs with.

And as we mark the anniversary of Lehman Brothers’ collapse, it’s these same 1% friends of Romney who he'll continue to protect, as Romney’s #43 Out-of-Touch, 1% Moment comes to mind: “I’d Like To Repeal” Wall Street Reform, which means once again allowing Wall Street to write its own rules. This is not a solution for curbing the reckless behavior that created our financial crisis in the first place, leading to millions of jobs lost and trillions lost in retirement savings. So while we continue to strengthen our middle class by restoring financial stability, it’s little comfort to find out how Romney sees the middle class.

And now for the rest of the need-to-see-to-believe list…

And the gap is even worse for women of color – African American women earn only 69 cents and Latina women earn only 59 cents for each dollar earned by males. To help address this unfair and unacceptable wage gap, President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act on January 29, 2009,1 restoring the protection against pay discrimination that was stripped away by the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. The Act reinstates prior law and makes clear that pay discrimination claims on the basis of sex, race, national origin, age, religion and disability “accrue” whenever an employee receives a discriminatory paycheck, as well as when a discriminatory pay decision or practice is adopted, when a person becomes subject to the decision or practice, or when a person is otherwise affected by the decision or practice.
