Top-50 List of Romney’s All-Time, Out-of-Touch, 1% Moments – ‘Class Size Doesn’t Matter’ Edition

May 24, 2012

Debuting at #28:  CNN, May 24, 2012 : “Romney defends class size stance to teachers” : ‘Mitt Romney, who is spending this week promoting a plan for America's public school system, spent Thursday morning defending his stance that smaller class sizes don't necessarily equate with better learning in schools.’

Serious Question: Is there a parent in America who thinks it makes no difference in the quality of their kid(s)’ education if class sizes are bigger?   And let's not forget that Romney himself made sure his 5 sons went to private schools with small class sizes.

On to the list, which has doubled in size since the last edition because the sheer volume of Romney’s gazillionaire gaffes in recent weeks has left us with no other choice…

So mine's like a quarter horse, but just a much better gait -- it moves very fast." [Huffington Post, 4/10/12]

According to Ms. McClanahan, about an hour into the flight — which Mr. Romney mostly spent reading USA Today and using an iPad while wearing headphones — she told him her idea for improving the American health care system: slashing overhead costs by switching to an electronic billing system.  “He looked at me blankly and said, ‘I understand,’ then put his iPad headphones in and kept reading,” she said. Instead, he will keep his private insurance and pay for it on his own …To be clear, there's something admirable about Romney living by his principles. The problem is that his plan wouldn't simply reduce Medicare coverage for the very wealthy. It'd reduce Medicare coverage for many other people, too.  Remember, Romney has called for transforming Medicare into a voucher system, effectively ending the guarantee of comprehensive benefits that the government now makes to seniors. [The New Republic, March 12, 2012]

19) “Mitt Romney involved in Medicare Fraud” : “A spokesman for Romney, Eric Fehrnstrom, said that Romney and other board members helped uncover the fraud at Damon after similar fraudulent practices were found at another laboratory in 1992. … But court records, including statements by prosecutors and by Damon officials, indicated that the fraud continued until Corning purchased the firm. Peterson $21,500 since 2008 to lobby city officials for the renovation.” [Politico, March 27, 2012]

12) “An ordinary bank account” : “Romney’s 2010 tax return reveals a Swiss bank account. “It is a bank account. Nothing more, nothing less. An ordinary bank account,” [Romney money manager Brad Malt said] …Tax experts have noted to TPM in recent days that U.S. law changed shortly before then, to make it harder for U.S. persons to avail themselves of tax havens. Shortly thereafter the IRS gave people secreting their money abroad a time window for compliance. Taking camp Romney at its word, that wasn’t really their concern. Even if the account existed for purposes of diversification that could be politically embarrassing in and of itself, constituting a bet against U.S. currency. But to fully answer the question, we’d need to know if that bank account is declared in the years before the law changed. Camp Romney did not respond to a request for comment on this point Tuesday.
